She spent the day learning about the new products they will be offering, as well as all about their existing products. Perhaps the most exciting development was an integrated home system to control your curtains and blinds, along with your heating, lighting and security in your home. Another interesting development is the introduction of Move. Silent Gliss Move is a wireless system which is very similar to Alexa and Hive. The Move server is plugged into your internet router and blinds and curtains can be operated by an app on your phone or tablet, allowing you to set scenes and timers. Perfect for the modern home!

Annie had a great time learning more about what Silent Gliss has to offer, and feels confident that she is now better able to inform Glasswells customers, and guide them towards their perfect home window systems.

Introducing Kim - Our New Interior Designer

Kim BackhouseWe are delighted to introduce Kim Backhouse as our brand new Interior Designer. Kim will be working alongside the Soft Furnishings team with Debbie in our stunning new Design Centre.

Kim has a background in creative art and a BA (Hons) degree in Applied Interior Design. Prior to Glasswells she was employed as a Design Consultant and Window Display Visualiser. Starting out in fashion retail, she then transferred her interests in colour and style to interiors. Drawing has always been a passion which she has more recently utilised with commissions for architectural and vehicle watercolour illustrations. These skills have been extremely useful when putting together design schemes, especially in the early sketching stage of the design process.

 

She also brings to the role a sound working knowledge of a fantastic 3D computer programme known as SketchUp. This allows Kim to construct our customers chosen room using gathered survey measurements, giving a 360-degree tour of the space and the ability to add textures from around the store to show fabrics, wallpaper, furniture, lighting, flooring and accessories.

Flooring Factory Visit

Last week, flooring manager Andrew Boreham took a trip to Europe to visit the Associated Weavers factory.

After a very long drive, he arrived at the impressive building in Belgium that houses their entire European operation. He has successfully reviewed our offerings, and updated the range for 2019.

The next day, he got a look at their European only products, which consisted of a lot more colour rather than the grey & beige that continues to be popular in the UK markets. Looking at these ranges led to a couple of last minute tweaks to inject some colour into our shop floor ranges.

Finally, he had a factory tour to check out their printed carpets, tufting lines & warehouse distribution setup, before embarking on a long journey home!

Woodpecker Flooring Training

One of our flooring sales people, Martin, visited Woodpecker Flooring last week.

Based in Wales, Woodpecker is a family owned and run company. Martin received a clear & concise explanation of the products Woodpecker can provide, as well as the benefits of each product.

After lunch, the day continued with a tour of the factory as well as basic information on fitting of their products.

By sending our staff on as many of these training courses as possible, we aim to ensure that each and every Glasswells customer goes home with exactly the flooring they need for their perfect home.


Gary King Celebrates 40 Years at Glasswells

We have proudly presented Gary King, Manager of our Branch in Haverhill, with an award for 40 years of loyal service.

Gary King joined our business shortly after leaving school, working in the separate carpet shop in Queens Square, Haverhill. Whilst working there as a junior Gary learned the many complexities of the carpet trade and his personal qualities of exacting accuracy and thoroughness soon promoted him to carpet department manager in 1983. Over his career at Glasswells, Gary has managed our Saffron Walden branch, as well as the store’s largest flooring department in Bury St Edmunds between 1995 and 2000.

Paul Glasswell, managing director explained, “Gary is an incredibly reliable, loyal and hardworking man. We have been very lucky to have him looking after our Haverhill branch for the past eighteen years and are very proud of the good reputation that Gary and his team have gained in the town. Gary is a model employee; he overcomes challenges with very little fuss and is a credit to the company. He has dedicated his working life to Glasswells, and for that we are grateful.”

Gary will be celebrating his milestone at Glasswells with the gift of some new fishing gear.

We at Glasswells use Feefo to collect honest reviews from our existing customers to help our prospective customers make their purchasing decisions, and also to help us tend to the needs of our customers.

Feefo's Trusted Service Award awards businesses that use their service & meet certain criiteria. According to Feefo's website:

"For our Trusted Service 2019 award, a business must have collected at least 50 reviews between January 1st 2018 and December 31st 2018, and achieved a Feefo service rating of between 4.0 and 4.4. To achieve our coveted Gold Trusted Service 2019 award, a business must have collected at least 50 reviews between January 1st 2018 and December 31st 2018, and achieved a Feefo service rating of at least 4.5."

New Flooring Choices At Glasswells

Another phase of the ongoing £1million refurbishment project at Glasswells has been completed this week, with the modernisation of our huge flooring showroom in Bury St Edmunds.

The carpet and rug displays have been given a fresh, modern look to clearly show our shoppers the different choices of materials and colours on offer. The new-look hard flooring area, showcases luxury vinyl tiles, laminate & engineered wood flooring designs from leading brands including Amtico & Karndean. The new department boasts interactive screens & extra-large samples of the products, helping our customers visualise what their new floor will look like.
Paul Glasswell, our Managing Director, explained "This ambitious refurbishment, the most comprehensive in Glasswells’ history, has all been planned with the customer in mind. We have always strived to offer our customers the latest and most stylish furnishing options and it is essential that our environment provides visitors with the very best shopping experience. We are a forward thinking Company and understand how important it is to move with the times and embrace change. Whilst we continue to work through the store and give each department a fresh, new look, our ethos of offering the widest choice, at the best value, with the highest customer service remains the same.”

The works so far have involved an extension and complete refit of the in-store Place to Eat restaurant and full redecoration of the furniture and bedroom display areas. The next phase of this huge project is due to start in the Spring, with the soft furnishing and interior design departments getting a complete style overhaul. And, whilst all this is going on, it’s business as usual in our stores!

Glasswells Celebrates Long Service

We have recently celebrated our annual Christmas party for long serving and retired staff last Friday at our Newmarket Road store in Bury St Edmunds.

The “gold watch club” is made up of employees from all areas of the furnishings, removals and warehousing business who have worked at Glasswells for twenty years or more and, who traditionally, are awarded with a gold watch to mark their long service.

Between them, they rack up over 1,700 years of long service with the family business. Attendees included Terry Glasswell and Richard Ball, who both retired from the company after 50 years of service, and Roger Tricker who still works for the firm after 54 dedicated years.

The annual get together coincided with the Glasswells’ Christmas gift and profit distribution to staff, a tradition started over seventy years ago by the father and son founders, Jerry and Leslie Glasswell.
