Wood and Hard Flooring

Wood is a natural product which can last for generations. Listed below are some of the characteristics that are common to wood flooring:

  • Improves with age.
  • Natural variations in grain-patterns making each plank unique.
  • Natural knots in planks.
  • Hard-wearing filler used in knots where necessary.
  • Some variations in shade to samples.
  • Some movement can occur.
  • Surface can indent and scratch.

Sub-floor damp and level test

To ensure that you have the best experience possible with hard flooring it is vital that you have a sub-floor damp and level test.

Why is it so important?

Wood is hydroscopic and takes in moisture readily, so dampness in the sub floor can cause the wood to expand affecting its appearance. Solution: as a matter of course we install a damp proof membrane sheet, but extreme problems of damp should be rectified before fitting. An uneven sub floor can cause your new floor to squeak and move, and even cause joints to come apart.

As part of the service here at Glasswells we believe in providing a hard floor that will cause you no problems, which is why we give a FREE sub-floor damp and level test for hard flooring!

Types of Wood Flooring

Solid Wood

Each board is made from a single piece of timber, usually with a tongue and groove joint on the ends as well as the long sides. Wood is a natural product and is susceptible to dimensional changes due to humidity and moisture.

Real Wood Engineered

These floors offer stability and a greater variety of design. They are normally constructed in three layers using the chosen species as a top wear layer with a central care of either softwood, high density fibre board (HDF) with a balancing spruce veneer or a birch plywood. The top wear layer can vary from a 0.6mm to 6mm depending on the product.

How to Choose

These descriptions do not apply to every board we display. Availability is shown on each individual product.

Timber offers a wonderful diversity of tones, textures and colour. Choose from popular colours such as light, dark, limed and white oak to more unusual shades from Wenge, Merbau, Maple and a wide range of smoked colours.

Caring for your Wood Flooring

  • Regularly sweep or vacuum the floor to prevent grit or abrasive dust from accumulating and scratching the surface.
  • Wipe up any spilled liquids immediately.
  • Use protective pads under all furniture legs.
  • Use barrier mats inside and outside all external doorways. We recommend hug rug mats indoors.
  • Never use wax oil based detergent or any household cleaner.
