Where Indoor Meets Out, Blurring The Lines of Modern Living

by Sarah Norris, Garden Buyer

This year marks 80 years of Glasswells, and in that time few areas of the home have evolved as dramatically as the garden. What was once a purely seasonal space is now a true extension of the home - designed for dining, relaxing and entertaining. Outdoor living is no longer reserved for summer; it has become part of everyday life.

Over the years, I’ve seen a clear shift in how customers approach their gardens. They’re no longer simply looking for a furniture set - they’re creating outdoor rooms, spaces that feel as comfortable and considered as their interiors. Whether hosting barbecues, enjoying a quiet morning coffee, or welcoming friends and family, the right combination of carefully chosen furniture, landscaping, shade and shelter can transform any outdoor area into a retreat that can be enjoyed all year round.

Comfort and longevity are now central to these decisions. Deep seating, generous proportions and durable materials matter more than ever. Customers increasingly value well-made pieces that can withstand the unpredictability of British weather while retaining their look and feel season after season. It’s less about quick updates and more about investing in furniture that genuinely enhances how the space is used.

"Customers are looking for garden furniture pieces that feel just as comfortable and considered as their indoor furniture."

For 2026, the trend continues towards softer, warmer neutral tones - stone, linen, sand and muted greys - shades that sit beautifully against natural greenery. Classic rattan remains popular for its texture and versatility, while aluminium has firmly established itself as one of our fastest-growing material categories. Lightweight, corrosion-resistant and low-maintenance, high-quality aluminium frames offer a contemporary look with long-term durability. Responsibly sourced teak remains a premium choice, valued for both its strength and timeless appeal.

Beyond aesthetics, there is a growing appreciation of the wellbeing benefits of outdoor living. Time spent in natural light and fresh air can boost mood, reduce stress, and improve overall balance. Even a short period outside can reset the mind. Comfortable, thoughtfully chosen furniture makes it easier to enjoy these moments more often.

“It’s about creating spaces people genuinely want to spend time in.”

Many customers are now layering their outdoor spaces much like they would indoors. Pergolas, for example, have become an essential addition. Crafted from robust, weather-resistant aluminium, they provide shelter from sun and rain, extending the usability of a garden throughout the season. Optional side screens or louvred panels offer extra privacy and protection from wind, creating a space that feels sheltered and inviting. Awnings offer a similarly practical solution, providing adjustable shade and protection from the elements outside the home, particularly above bifold doors across seating areas.

After eight decades, our mission remains unchanged: to help customers create homes they love. The garden has always been a place to gather, unwind and reconnect - and today, it plays an even more vital role in everyday living.

Sometimes, the most beautiful room in the house has no walls at all.
